Old Man Gloom - “The Forking Path”

Not counting Pelican’s EP given their lightening of style in recent years, it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a new release from a major post-metal band.  It’s been three years now since ISIS’s last studio album was released, three years since Pelican’s last full-length, four years since the last Neurosis and Cult of Luna records came out… not to mention the eight-year span between this band’s latest studio releases.  While there seems to be an almost endless stream of young post-metal groups releasing tons awesome material, but none of them seem to quite measure up to the genre’s titans.  NO has really been the first major release of the big-name crowd in quite some time and it just is so refreshing to be absolutely pummeled into submission by the masters of heavy sounds once again.  It’s been too long.  Plus, Cult of Luna and Neurosis have new records on the horizon.  This is going to be a killer year.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Caleb Scofield’s vocals in this track are absolutely insane.  He’s gotta be the master of the bellowy, barking post-metal/sludgy hardcore vocal style.
